Identify an action you can take to continue advancing social justice
I started the ‘Start Where You Are’ challenges blog in August of 2020, in response to the surging outreach from people who wanted to ask me, as a DEI practitioner, what they could do to promote social justice. Almost five years and one hundred posts later, I’m still here to fulfill that need.
If you are truly committed to creating positive outcomes for people who have been historically excluded, you’re in the right place. And I remain right here with you. To that end, let’s get to this week’s challenge.
Take some time to think about what you as an individual can do to keep advancing social justice. Here are a few ideas:
Surround yourself with people with a similar commitment. You may not have all the answers. You may even just need a minute to regroup. That’s fine. And then be sure to tap into your network, get recentered, and strategize together.
Take stock of the spaces you occupy where you have authority and influence. That may be within your own household, your neighborhood, your community, or in an organization you’re a part of. Think about resources you have access to that you can continue to provide to those around you who need your support.
Ask yourself what messages, knowledge, or encouragement you can continue to deliver when no one around you is now held accountable to do so.
It’s time to get creative and resourceful, like generations have done before us. And remember - one action, no matter how small it may seem to you, could create a ripple of inspiration, hope, or change for those within your reach.
